Job Title: Reserve Team Coach & Head of Technical Analysis
Date of Birth: 01st February 1967
Birthplace: La Coruna – Spain
Nationality: Spanish
Joined: Since 2007
Angel joined the backroom staff in the summer of 2007 as head of the technical and video analysis department at Melwood and as reserve team coach.
His work involves both the first and reserve team squads and a typical day at Melwood will see him divide his time working with both Rafael Benitez and Gary Ablett. With the reserves, Angel is involved in training and monitors the progress of the players; while the other part of his job involves working with the first-team via video analysis in which he looks at ways to improve the performance. He also works closely with Rafa to arrange and co-ordinate the training programme for both the reserves and the first team. Since 1991 Angel has been a doctor of sports science, having most recently been teaching football to degree level at the University of La Coruna and to Masters level in three other Spanish universities. He has worked in both technical analysis and as part of the management team at CD Orense, Tenerife and regional teams in Galicia in Spain and Chaves in Portugal. It was during his time at university that he first came across Benitez and forged a strong friendship that has now lasted more than two decades. On his first meeting with Benitez, Angel says: "It is a story I have told many times: Rafa was at university in Madrid finishing his sports science course. As he was completing it I was just starting my own and that's how we met. "I am delighted that the boss has chosen me for this position and has faith in me to make it a success. I am thrilled to be part of this great club and working for the best fans in Europe. "My job analysing video footage never bores me. It's a bit of a joke with my friends because they are envious that I get paid to watch all these games. It is not hard work for me, though; it is my passion." |
