Though they work in two-week micro-cycles, patterns of training are planned an entire season in advance. De Miguel's responsibilities are not just confined to the training ground. He and assistants Gonzalo Rodriguez and Gerard Nus also coordinate the work the squad carries out in the gym. You'll also see him warming up the players alongside Sammy Lee on matchdays. "Rafa contacted me and asked me to come to Melwood and work with the first-team staff and I didn't hesitate," said De Miguel. "It is a seven-day-a-week job but my family understands. It is a fantastic experience for me to be here at one of the biggest clubs in the world. "Our target is to win titles and, when we do, it makes it all worthwhile." De Miguel's CV includes coaching at Atletico Madrid at the time when a 10-year-old striker by the name of Fernando Torres was coming through the junior ranks. In 2005 he became fitness coach at Valencia before arriving on Merseyside in 2007. |
